We Love Candles — But Let's Protect Your Linens

Let's be honest — we are absolutely obsessed with candles. Taper candles especially. There is nothing quite like the way a long, slender taper catches the light at a dinner reception, casting that warm, flickering glow across a beautifully dressed table. They are romantic. They are timeless. They make every room feel like something special is happening.

We love them. We really do.

And because we love them — and because we love your linens just as much — we want to talk about how to use them together without ending the night with a wax disaster.

The Problem with Dripping Wax

Wax and fabric are not friends. A single drip from a standard taper candle can leave a stain that is nearly impossible to fully remove from fine event linens — especially on delicate fabrics like satin, velvet, pintuck, or crush. The wax bonds to the fibers as it cools, and even professional cleaning can leave a shadow behind.

We have seen it happen at beautiful events. A stunning table, perfectly styled, and then — a drip. It is heartbreaking, and it is entirely preventable.

Use Non-Drip Candles

This is the single most important thing you can do. Non-drip taper candles are specifically formulated to burn cleanly, consuming the wax as they go rather than letting it run down the sides. They are widely available, they look identical to standard tapers, and they cost only a little more.

Ask your florist, your candle supplier, or your event rental company specifically for non-drip tapers. If they cannot confirm the candles are non-drip, source them yourself — it is worth every penny.

A few things to know about non-drip candles:

• They still need to be kept out of drafts. Air movement from open doors, ceiling fans, or outdoor breezes can cause even non-drip candles to drip. Position them thoughtfully.
• Burn them for at least an hour before your event to create an even wax pool. A candle that has never been lit before is more likely to drip in the first few minutes.
• Keep them straight. A tilted candle in a loose holder will drip regardless of its formulation.

Protect with Glass Cylinders

Even with non-drip candles, we always recommend placing tapers inside glass cylinders or hurricane vases. This does two things: it shields the flame from drafts (which reduces dripping risk further), and it creates a physical barrier between any wax and your linens.

Glass cylinders also look absolutely gorgeous. A tall, slender taper inside a clear glass hurricane, surrounded by greenery or florals, is one of the most elegant centerpiece elements in event design. It elevates the candle from a simple light source to a true design moment.

Your florist should be able to provide glass cylinders as part of your centerpiece package — it is a very standard rental item. If they do not carry them, ask your event rental company. They are inexpensive and reusable, and they make a meaningful difference in protecting your table.

Use Candle Coasters or Drip Trays

For pillar candles, votives, or any candle placed directly on the table, a candle coaster or drip tray adds another layer of protection. These are small, flat discs — often glass, acrylic, or mirrored — that sit beneath the candle holder and catch any wax that escapes.

They are subtle enough that guests rarely notice them, but they do real work. Mirrored coasters in particular add a lovely reflective quality to the table, bouncing candlelight back up through the centerpiece.

Again, your florist or rental company is your best resource here. Most carry them, and they are a simple add-on to any centerpiece order.

A Quick Checklist for Candle Safety on Linens

Before your event, run through this list with your florist or event coordinator:

• Non-drip tapers confirmed? Ask for the brand name if you are unsure.
• Glass cylinders or hurricanes in place? Every taper should be enclosed or protected.
• Candle holders secure and level? Wobbly holders are a drip risk.
• Drafts accounted for? Note any ceiling fans, vents, or open doors near the tables.
• Coasters under pillar candles and votives? A small detail that matters.

We are not saying skip the candles. Please do not skip the candles. A candlelit table is one of the most beautiful things in event design, and we want you to have every bit of that warmth and romance at your event.

We are just saying: protect your investment. Your linens are part of the story your table tells. A little planning with your florist goes a long way toward making sure that story ends beautifully — with no wax in sight.
