Black, White & Timeless: A Classic Wedding at The War Memorial
Crisp white linens, black napkins, white roses, and a four-tier cake with a dramatic black bow — a masterclass in timeless contrast at one of Metro Detroit's most storied venues.
There is a reason black and white never goes out of style. It is not a trend — it is a statement. And when that palette is executed with precision, in a venue as grand as The War Memorial in Grosse Pointe Farms, the result is something that feels less like a wedding and more like a work of art.
This celebration was exactly that.
The Setting: The War Memorial
The War Memorial is one of Metro Detroit's most distinguished event venues — a historic lakefront estate in Grosse Pointe Farms that carries the kind of architectural gravitas that makes every design decision feel intentional. High ceilings, classical details, and sweeping views of Lake St. Clair provide a backdrop that rewards restraint and rewards it beautifully.
For a black and white wedding, there is no better canvas.
The Linens: Contrast as Design
Our role in this wedding was to anchor the entire color story at the table level. White linens — clean, pressed, and luminous under the room's warm lighting — covered every banquet table. Against them, black napkins folded into crisp, structured forms created the contrast that made the whole room read as intentional rather than simply neutral.
It is a pairing we love precisely because it requires nothing else to work. No color accent, no metallic layer needed. The black and white does all the heavy lifting, and every other element — the florals, the flatware, the stationery — simply plays its part within that framework.
The Details That Elevated Everything
What separates a beautiful black and white wedding from a truly memorable one is the quality of the details. This one had them in abundance.
Jen House Design brought the floral vision to life with lush white rose and baby's breath centerpieces — full, romantic, and perfectly scaled to the room. The white-on-white of the florals against the white linens created a layered softness that kept the palette from ever feeling stark.
The draped ceiling installation by Events and Beyond MI transformed the room entirely. Soft fabric panels overhead gave the space an intimacy and warmth that a high-ceiling venue can sometimes lack, pulling the eye upward and making the entire room feel curated from floor to ceiling.
The custom seating chart by Modernly Events was a showstopper on its own — a beautifully designed display that greeted guests and set the tone before they ever reached their seats. LB Design Co. carried that same refined aesthetic through every piece of stationery and paper goods.
And the checkered dance floor from Pro DJ Services Inc. was the perfect punctuation mark — a bold, graphic element that felt completely at home in a black and white world.
The Cake
Four tiers. White fondant. A dramatic black satin bow.
The wedding cake was a design object as much as a confection — architectural in its proportions, graphic in its contrast, and completely in conversation with every other element in the room. It was the kind of cake that stops guests mid-conversation.
The Seating Chart
The custom seating chart display was one of those details that guests lingered over — beautifully lettered, elegantly framed, and perfectly placed to welcome everyone into the evening.
The Full Tablescape
Seeing the full tablescape come together — white linens, black napkins, white florals, formal flatware from Blue Sky Event Rentals LLC, and the soft glow of candlelight — was one of those moments that reminds us why we do this work.
Every element in service of one idea. Every detail considered. Nothing out of place.
The War Memorial deserved a wedding like this. And this wedding deserved a venue like The War Memorial.
